City’s road safety project now complete
The City of Lethbridge’s road safety project is complete, marking an important milestone in the City’s ongoing commitment to safer streets.

The goal of this project was to create an integrated Traffic Safety Culture Framework to help reduce traffic‑related injuries, fatalities and collisions caused by risky driving behaviours. A holistic approach was used to better understand how people experience and move through the community, and to build environments where safer choices are easier for everyone.
As part of this project, almost every elementary school in Lethbridge now has a School Travel Plan. The completed Framework and School Travel Plans will continue to guide road safety education and initiatives in Lethbridge. These plans look at how children travel each day and identify simple, practical ways to improve safety for walking, biking and rolling to school.
Throughout the project, community members, schools and local experts contributed valuable insight through surveys, observations and direct engagement. This input helped shape messaging, identify challenges, and ensure the outcomes reflect local context and needs.
“Road safety is about more than infrastructure, it’s about behaviours, awareness and shared responsibility,” says Adam St. Amant, Transportation Engineer. “This project brought together data, community input and best practices to help influence lasting change in how we think about safety on our roads, especially around schools.”
In addition to benefiting Lethbridge, the final materials, programs and processes developed through this project will be shared nationally, allowing other municipalities across Canada to reuse and adapt the work. This includes a School Travel Planning Intervention Toolkit which will help schools and cities choose solutions that make sense for their own neighbourhoods, such as safer crossings, better pick‑up and drop‑off areas and supportive messaging for families.
Resources will be available online in both English and French, contributing to broader transportation safety knowledge and practice.
Funding for this initiative was made in part thanks to Transport Canada’s Enhanced Road Safety Transfer Payment Program.
