Commemorative crosswalk installation to honour Veterans

A meaningful tribute is taking shape in the heart of the city.

The City of Lethbridge will install a commemorative Remembrance Day/Veterans Crosswalk at the intersection of 4 Avenue South and 10 Street South. Located near the Cenotaph, the initiative honours our veterans and continues our tradition of decorative crosswalks that reflect community values.

The painting occurs on Tuesday, October 28. To accommodate the installation, 4 Avenue South, between 10 Street South and 11 Street South, will close for the day. Traffic and transit will be detoured. Work will begin in the morning as temperatures rise. Due to cooler conditions, paint may take longer to dry. If needed, the team will complete final touches on Wednesday, October 29. This schedule is weather dependent - rain, snow, high winds or low temperatures may delay the work.

The crosswalk design was selected by the Lethbridge Legion. It features a soldier silhouette inspired by the Cenotaph statue, along with the phrase “LEST WE FORGET” in English and “IHTAISSKSINI’PA” in Blackfoot. This term was interpreted by Blood Tribe Elder Martin Heavy Head as “So that we know”. The French version “NOUS NOUS SOUVIENDRONS” is also included.

We appreciate your patience and support as we honour those who served. Details on 2025 Remembrance Day ceremonies will be shared closer to November 11.
