Community asked to conserve water amid heavy rainfall impacts
To help keep our water system running smoothly over the next few days, the City of Lethbridge is asking everyone - residents and businesses - to cut back on any non‑essential water use.

Heavy rainfall has washed a lot of mud and debris into the Oldman River, making the water much murkier than usual. This is creating some real challenges for the City of Lethbridge’s Water Treatment Plant as it works to keep our water clean and safe. Despite the murkier river conditions, tap water remains safe to drink.
To protect equipment and maintain safe treatment standards, water production has been reduced to levels below current system demand. At the same time, the Wastewater Treatment Plant is experiencing elevated flows and is under increased monitoring to ensure compliance and stable performance.
The community is asked to:
- avoid outdoor water use such as vehicle washing
- restrict indoor use by keeping showers short and delaying laundry or dishwashing
- use water only for essential purposes like drinking and cooking
- avoid stockpiling water
City departments are also suspending non‑essential water‑using activities and reducing internal consumption wherever possible.
These conservation measures will stay in place until further notice. Teams at both treatment plants are keeping a close eye on conditions and working around the clock to make sure your water stays safe and reliable.
