Crowsnest Trail Pathway construction begins this season
The Crowsnest Trail Pathway will run from Mayor Magrath Drive South, near the intersection of 4 Avenue South, along the south side of the Crowsnest Trail (Hwy 3), and into the WT Hill Business Park area.
- The west end of the project begins near the Sandman Inn, through the water reservoir site to the Crowsnest Trail on-ramp.
- East of the on-ramp, the pathway will be constructed as a shared lane space that will be paved.
- The pathway will be built within the grass boulevard on the south side of Crowsnest Trail towards WT Hill Business Park area.
- On the east side of the rail crossing, the pathway will continue within the boulevard space and then utilize the existing parking lanes along 1 Avenue South, 34 Street South, and 4 Avenue South.
- It will end at the intersection of 4 Avenue South and WT Hill Boulevard South.
This project is included in the Capital Improvement Plan 2014 - 2023.
Construction schedule begins this season
Construction is expected to begin this week, and continue until late fall, 2025. Pathway construction work will resume in Spring, 2026, with completion anticipated by the end of August 2026.
The work will be staged to minimize impacts to traffic flow as much as possible. Speeds along adjacent roadways may be temporarily lowered when crews are working in close proximity to traffic.
Intersection upgrades and changes along the pathway
The pathway construction involves upgrading intersections and new features or changes:
- A southern section of the pathway will share and run adjacent to a newly paved residential lane before continuing north along boulevard.
- The intersection of 28 Street South and Crowsnest Trail will undergo upgrades affecting traffic signals, lighting, and curbs - detours and/or lane closures may occur.
- The pathway will cross a rail line and will require new safety controls for pathway users. This will be the first pathway rail crossing of this type in Lethbridge.
- The portion of the pathway within the WT Hill Industrial Park will run alongside the existing roadway.
- Along its length, the pathway will also include various protective measures such as steel guardrail, concrete barriers, protective fencing, delineators and buffer spaces to protect pathway users from traffic on the adjacent roadways.
- While this pathway project ends at WT Hill Blvd. South and 4th Avenue South, the placement leaves opportunities to create future connectivity to the MPE Link Pathway.
