Is there a limit to how many batteries I can put out?
No – there is no maximum or minimum amount that you can recycle.
Even if you only have a couple of AAs that you just swapped out from your TV remote, bag them and put them out for collection! If your bag feels a bit light, check in with your neighbours to see if they have any dead batteries to recycle.
If you have lots of batteries, you can set out multiple bags. Just make sure to use large, clear, resealable bags.
Which types of batteries are accepted?
AcceptedMost household and single-use batteries are accepted, including: |
|
Not acceptedThe curbside program does not accept: |
|
What am I supposed to do with non-accepted types?
Batteries that aren't accepted through the Curbside Battery Recycling Program can be dropped off at the Waste & Recycling Centre.
There are also several businesses throughout Lethbridge that offer battery recycling. You can learn more on Call2Recycle's website.
What if it snows on my collection day? Will my bag get picked up if it’s buried in snow?
Collection crews will manually check the lids of all green carts before they are picked up by the collection truck. Even if your battery bag is buried in a foot of snow, our team will find it!
What if it's windy on my collection day? Will my bag blow away?
Collection crews will check for loose bags around green carts.
I live in an apartment/multi-family dwelling. Can I participate?
Only residents with a curbside green cart can participate in the curbside collection program.
However, there are other ways to participate. Residents who live in apartments/multi-family dwellings can pick up a battery collection bag or use a resealable plastic bag. Bagged batteries can be dropped off at any of the City’s yard waste sites or the Waste & Recycling Centre.
Why can't I throw batteries in the garbage?
Batteries can ignite and explode if they are not disposed of properly. They pose a significant risk to Waste and Environment crews and other residents and should never be placed in curbside carts.
