Diving into accessibility: Fritz Sick Pool reopens to the public

A much more accessible Fritz Sick Pool has rewelcomed the masses!

An impactful renovation project has improved the building’s accessibility and safety. Upgrades include:

  • Barrier-free showers and toilet stalls.
  • Two new women’s showers (bringing the total to five) plus a universal shower.
  • Widened access points to the pool and locker rooms.
  • A new open, accessible entrance leading to a larger lobby with a barrier-free counter.
  • Non-slip flooring throughout all locker rooms, washrooms, and shower areas.
  • Updated wheelchair ramps for easier mobility.

The improvements ensure everyone can enjoy a more comfortable environment at the pool. Sunni Belle, General Manager of Canadian Recreation Excellence – Lethbridge, says the changes reflect a commitment to inclusivity.

“These upgrades are all about ensuring everyone can access and enjoy the facility with ease,” says Belle. “We are proud to make Fritz Sick Pool a more welcoming space, where every visitor can have a convenient and relaxing experience. We’re excited to welcome the public back and show off our upgraded space!”

Unforeseen issues with the pool basin delayed the reopening.

“We appreciate the patience of our community and partners during the closure,” says Robin Harper, GM of Recreation and Culture. “Though it was an inconvenience, we’re confident the public will appreciate the long-term benefits of the accessibility upgrades.”
