First responders join Sirens for Life campaign with Canadian Blood Services
First responders save lives every day. Now they’re giving back through plasma donation.
Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services and Lethbridge Police Service are joining Canadian Blood Services in the national Sirens for Life campaign, a partnership that brings together first responders across Canada to save lives through blood and plasma donation.
To launch this year’s campaign, department leadership is making a group donation today, September 8, at the Lethbridge Plasma Donor Centre.
“Every day, our teams respond to emergencies where blood products are needed,” says Greg Adair, Chief of Fire and EMS. “Today, we are stepping up by rolling up our sleeves and donating.”
“Our job is to help people in emergencies,” says Wes Borland, Deputy Chief with LFES. “Donating blood and plasma is another way we can support the patients who depend on us.”
The Sirens for Life campaign highlights the impact of every donation:
- 50 donors can help save one crash victim
- 130 plasma donations can provide one year of treatment for an immune deficiency patient
- Five donors can support a heart surgery patient
Community members are encouraged to join and contribute to a Sirens for Life team. Donors can sign up through blood.ca by searching the team name “Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services – SFL” or “Lethbridge Police Service – SFL.”
“Lethbridge is an amazing and generous community,” says Shahin Mehdizadeh, Chief of Lethbridge Police Service. “I know that many will answer the call – helping others through their gift of plasma donation.”
“We are hoping that Sirens for Life Lethbridge will encourage the community to roll up their sleeves and donate plasma,” says Lisa Castro, Community Development Manager for Canadian Blood Services (CBS). “Canadian Blood Services aims to grow its donor base to one million over the next five years across Canada, and Lethbridge plays an important role in this ambitious goal. CBS also wants to highlight that when someone donates plasma, they not only help a patient, but they also gain something meaningful in return: a sense of purpose, connection and fulfillment.”
