Impacts anticipated due to westside construction projects
As there are multiple projects underway on the city’s westside, residents may notice some traffic changes, heavy equipment, as well as the potential for loose soil to blow around.
Here is an overview of work underway or scheduled to begin during the next few months:
Grading in Piers and Crossings subdivisions

- Large scale earth and lot grading activities have started in both Crossings and Piers (located directly west of the Garry Station and Crossings subdivisions), which is a brand-new subdivision. This work is being done by developers and their contractors
- Lot grading – a typical step in the land development process – involves the stripping of topsoil and native grasses from fields and the movement of clay within the site
- As high winds have the potential to blow loose soil particles toward adjacent properties in established urban neighbourhoods, developers and their consultants follow a soil erosion control plan. To ensure that the movement of soil is minimized, they take steps such as wind fences, watering of the site and roughing the soil to trap loose soil particles
- The developers and their consultants will monitor work activities and minimize the disturbance of soil if high winds are present. This will be monitored until the subdivision is fully built out
Traffic changes in Garry Station and Crossings due to new schools

- The Lethbridge School Division’s new West Coulee Station Elementary School in Garry Station is set to open in September 2025. Construction has also started for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division’s new elementary school, which is near the intersection of Caledonia Boulevard West and Abitibi Road West. It is set to open in September 2026
- All-way stops and speed limit reductions have been implemented along Abitibi Road West. These traffic controls were installed in May so motorists, pedestrians and cyclists can become familiar with the changes well before the West Coulee Station Elementary School opens in September
- The City of Lethbridge has both short and long-term plans for effective traffic control. We are also committed to continually monitoring and modifying these plans as needed.
- A traffic assessment study has been recently completed in the areas of Halifax Road West and Abitibi Road West and Abitibi Road West and Caledonia Boulevard West. These studies show traffic is currently well within the road capacity. As these residential neighbourhoods continue to develop, and the new schools open, we do anticipate an increase in traffic congestion. We will continue to monitor and mitigate these areas as development continues
Reminder to stay safe, follow signs and reduce speed
Please maintain a safe distance from all excavated areas and machinery while work is in progress. As crews and contractors work to upgrade and maintain the streets and roads around the City, motorists are asked to slow down and pay attention to signage to keep crews and themselves safe.
Stay up-to-date on road work, detours and closures
Road closures and repairs are available on the City’s WebMap for further information. The WebMap is a dynamic online platform designed to enhance accessibility and streamline information for residents. The map provides residents with accurate and up-to-date information on road closures, facility closures and City projects and initiatives.
