Overnight coulee fire underscores fire risk in River Valley

River Valley fire ban in effect in the City of Lethbridge

An unattended spark in the River Valley last night nearly became a major emergency, prompting a River Valley fire ban now in effect.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) responded to a grass fire in the River Valley near Scenic Drive and 10 Avenue South just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13. Crews from four stations were dispatched to a fire burning uphill through dry grass and vegetation. The coordinated response quickly brought the fire under control, preventing it from reaching nearby homes. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.

Warmer temperatures, strong winds and low humidity have created a high fire risk. These conditions create a high risk for fast-moving and uncontrolled fires. Even a small spark can spread quickly in dry grass and brush. As a result, a fire ban is now in effect for all open fires in the City of Lethbridge River Valley. The ban is effective immediately and until further notice.

Residents and visitors are asked to use extra caution. Do not light any open fires and ensure smoking materials are fully extinguished and disposed of safely.
