Overnight lane closures on Whoop-Up Drive Sunday and Monday

There will be additional impacts to traffic on Whoop-Up Drive early next week – but it will be during late evening and overnight hours and help lead to the re-opening of further lanes by mid-week.

Final steps of the bridge rehabilitation work

  • The last stage will be completed with the installation of the permanent seals and the curing of high-performance concrete for the bridge’s expansion joints

Overnight Sunday and Monday impacts

  • From 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday, September 28, and Monday, September 29, the westbound lanes on Whoop-Up Drive will be fully closed
  • The southbound Scenic Drive off-ramp will also be closed, detouring traffic onto 5 Avenue, then 5 Street to 6 Avenue onto Whoop-Up Drive
  • There will be two-way traffic in eastbound lanes

Either Monday, September 29, or Tuesday, September 30, depending on timing and weather cooperation, will be the final day for peak hour lane changes introduced on August 20. We have had two westbound lanes open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. to accommodate the afternoon and evening commute. Eastbound traffic on the bridge has been limited to a single lane during these times.

Lane updates for Wednesday, October 1

  • The anticipation is to re-open two lanes in each direction by Wednesday, October 1
  • As one lane in each direction has the most heavily damaged girders, following the unrelated bridge incident from August 6, those lanes will need to remain closed until the repairs are completed
  • Numbering the lanes from one to six, from north to south: 1 and 2 will be open, 3 and 4 will remain closed, 5 and 6 will be open
  • The northbound Scenic Drive off-ramp onto Whoop-Up Drive will re-open
  • The speed limit will remain at 50 km/h
  • Additional signage will be in place

Further updates to bridge repairs from girder incident anticipated next week

  • Work is still being done to finalize the design for the repairs needed. We anticipate having a more detailed update by mid-to-late next week

Drivers are asked to slow down, follow posted signage and exercise caution while crossing the bridge. Thank you for your cooperation in observing posted speed limits for the safety of workers and the long-term durability of this vital infrastructure.
