Scaling up capacity at the Waste and Recycling Centre
Double the weighing, half the waiting.
New upgrades coming to the Waste and Recycling Centre will make it twice as fast for customers to access waste, recycling and organics services.

“Throughout the past few years, we’ve seen a significant increase in traffic and demand, including an average of 1,200 customers each Saturday for the free drop-off program,” says Mandi Parker, GM of Waste and Environment. “These upgrades will help speed up and organize the flow of traffic and keep customers from spending their day waiting in line.”
Changes and upgrades include:
- A new scale house.
- New traffic management devices.
- Two in-bound and two out-bound scale decks – twice as many as before.
- Automated fast-track lanes for commercial and frequent customers.
Starting Monday, June 16, the existing scale house and scale decks will be decommissioned and traffic detours will be in effect. Temporary in-bound and out-bound scales will be used to maintain access to the landfill during construction.
“Customers will still be able to use the Waste and Recycling Centre as normal while construction is taking place,” says Mark Molesky, Waste Engineer. “We have posted traffic maps on-site to help customers navigate the temporary entrance and exit points.”
Construction is scheduled to be completed by mid-November.
This project is approved and funded through the City of Lethbridge Capital Improvement Program.
More information about the project, including a detailed traffic map, is available on the City’s public engagement website, getinvolvedlethbridge.ca.
Residents with household recycling and organic waste can also use the City’s three drop-off depots, which are open for the season. Locations and approved materials can be found on the City’s website.
