Two more phases breaking ground on major interchange project

Phases seven and eight are ready to proceed for the Whoop-Up Drive/Scenic Drive Interchange Improvements. Both phases begin Wednesday, August 26.

Phase seven is the southbound lanes in the 400 block of Scenic Drive South.

• Pedestrians will move to the new sidewalk along the east side of the Scenic Drive South. This will accommodate utility relocations and construction of a new multi-use pathway along the west side of the road.
• Southbound traffic remains at two lanes during this phase.
• The Scenic Drive entrance to Tim Hortons will be closed for a period of the work. Signage will direct motorists to access the restaurant via 4 Avenue South or 5 Avenue South.

Phase eight includes the southbound lanes of Scenic Drive South, south of 5 Avenue South.

• Traffic on the Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp will move to the new second lane. This provides a wider berth for changes to the west edge of the ramp. 
• The pedestrian pathway along Whoop-Up Drive, east of the Oldman River bridge, will be closed. Eastbound pedestrians will detour onto Coal Banks Trail, through the Fort Whoop-Up area, and up the 3 Avenue South hill to Scenic Drive South.

The crosswalk over the Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp remains closed. The pedestrian pathway along the west side of Scenic Drive, from 4 Street South near 9 Avenue South all the way to the crosswalk, is also closed. For westbound pedestrians to access the Whoop-Up Drive pedestrian pathway, beginning at the intersection of Scenic Drive South and 4 Street South:

• Go north on 4 Street South to 6 Avenue South
• East on 6 Avenue South to 5 Street South
• North on 5 Street South to 3 Avenue South
• West on 3 Avenue South, down the hill to Coal Banks Trail (in front of Fort Whoop-Up), up to the east end of the Oldman River bridge

Signage is in place throughout both pedestrian areas during the closures. Motorists are asked to obey the reduced speed limits, including the 30 km/h limit on the Whoop-Up on-ramp.
