Two weekend structure fires reinforce the importance of smoke alarms and closed doors

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) responded to two separate residential structure fires over the weekend.
On February 27, at approximately 6:40 a.m., several 9-1-1 calls reported a structure fire in the 1600 block of 2 Avenue North. When crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home. Twenty firefighters from three stations worked quickly to bring the fire under control and stop it from spreading to nearby properties. No injuries were reported.
On March 1, at approximately 8:30 a.m., LFES responded to reports of smoke inside a residence in the 100 Block of Blackfoot Boulevard West. Twenty-four firefighters from four stations attended. Crews found a fire in the basement and put it out quickly. The fire was contained to one room. Closed interior doors helped slow the spread of fire and smoke, which reduced damage to the rest of the home. All residents got out safely. One person was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
LFES reminds residents and property owners to test their smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed. Make sure your household has a clear fire escape plan and practise it together. If you see smoke or fire, get out and call 9-1-1 right away.
