Upgrades underway for a safer, smoother commute
A significant traffic project begins this week.

The Whoop-Up Drive/Scenic Drive Interchange Improvements will upgrade Scenic Drive South from 2 Avenue South to Whoop-Up Drive. This includes two additional lanes of travel on Scenic Drive South (one northbound and one southbound) and a second lane along the westbound Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp. Other improvements include:
- signal upgrades
- a multi-use asphalt path
- updated pedestrian crossings
These updates will improve motorist and pedestrian mobility along this busy corridor.
The first stage of work involves widening the Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp. Beginning June 16, equipment and personnel will work in the green space located south of the on-ramp. Lane closures are not involved with this stage. However, speed reductions will be in place along southbound Scenic Drive, westbound Whoop-Up Drive and the Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp. A flag person will also stop traffic along westbound Whoop-Up Drive when construction vehicles exit the work area.

The updated on-ramp will be similar to the on-ramp from northbound University Drive West to Whoop-Up Drive.
The expected completion date for the entire project is November 2026. The City of Lethbridge will provide updates as the project progresses, including road closures and other impacts. More information, including detailed design plans and timelines, can also be found on the Get Involved Lethbridge webpage.
