Weekend water rescue a reminder of river risks

River Safety

At about 7 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 11 Lethbridge Fire & Emergency Services (LFES) crew members from three stations responded to reports of people in distress in the Oldman River. Using rescue boats and tactical swimmers, crews successfully rescued two individuals from the river.

This event serves as an important reminder that river conditions remain hazardous due to high water levels and strong currents. Until water levels return to a safer state, residents are urged to stay clear of the river whenever possible.

As the summer vacation season begins and temperatures rise, more people may want to participate in river activities. Remember these important water safety tips:

  • wear a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device
  • avoid alcohol or other intoxicants
  • carry a cell phone in a waterproof bag for emergencies
  • if floating the river, inform someone of where you will enter, exit and when you expect to return
  • drink water to avoid dehydration
  • wear a hat and sunscreen to avoid sunstroke

The community is reminded that river conditions can change quickly. Anyone planning to float, paddle or boat should check current river conditions before heading out at rivers.alberta.ca.
