2025 Spring Service Levels

The sun is sunning, the greeneries are greening and the insects are insecting!

Yes, it feels like spring has officially arrived in Lethbridge. To help everyone know what to expect, the Parks Department is sharing a summary of the levels of service for different park areas.

Irrigation

  • All systems turn on June 1. The order of priority is:
    1. Regional parks, sports fields and schools.
    2. Cemeteries, community core parks, Downtown core parks and neighbourhood parks.
    3. Neighbourhood pocket parks, linear parks and buffers.
  • Turf watering: one inch per week during summer months but is reduced during wetter conditions.
  • Plantings watering (bubblers): two gallons per week.
  • Depending on the weather conditions, some systems may be delayed in running regular watering cycles.
  • The City typically irrigates during the evening, but the public may see watering during the day if there are issues or if staff are doing repairs.

Fountains

Decorative fountains will be re-installed this year at the following locations: 

South 

  • One at Henderson Lake.
  • Three at Fairmont Park.
  • One at Coulee Creek Park.

North

  • Three at Chinook Lake.
  • One at Wolfrun Park (Blackwolf).

West

  • One at Canyon Crest Park.
  • Three at West Highlands Park.
  • Two at Riverstone Park.
  • One at Sunridge Park.
  • Two at The Crossings Park.
  • Two at Garry Station.

The timeline for installation is from May 12-30. Removals begin October 1, weather permitting.

Turf Maintenance

  • Mowing: once per week.
  • Trimming: once per month.
  • Turf enhancements (aeration, fertilization, etc.): three-year cycle and 2025 fertilization is set for south Lethbridge.
  • Mowing schedules may be delayed after rain events if the turf is too wet.

Sports Fields and Regional Parks 

  • Mowing: twice per week.
  • Trimming: once per week.
  • Turf enhancements (aeration, fertilization, etc.): once per year.
  • Broad Leaf Control: once per year.

Chemical Application and Pest Control 

  • Broad leaf control: one-third of irrigated turf per year. This year, broadleaf control is happening in west Lethbridge.
  • Chemical trimming planted beds: once per year.
  • Chemical trimming medians: once per year.
  • Noxious weeds: weekly.
  • Dandelions may be present in some parks from mid-May to early June. They serve as a valuable food source for pollinators and other wildlife early in the spring. The City of Lethbridge became a Bee City in 2023.

Parks Maintenance (starting May 1)

  • Garbage cans emptied: once per week.
  • Doggie bag dispensers refilled: once per week.

  • Washrooms open and cleaned: daily.

Shrub Maintenance

  • Inspections and maintenance: one to three times per year, as required.
