A smoother stroll at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden

A major project will improve accessibility and visitor experience at one of Lethbridge’s most popular attractions.

The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden (NYJG) Pathway project begins Monday, August 31. The project is part of the City of Lethbridge 2022 – 2031 Capital Improvement Program and supports City Council’s Strategic Plan by supporting a culturally vibrant city.

The Garden’s regular season ends on August 30, with construction beginning the next day. The project is scheduled to be done by October 31, with no impact on the Winter Light Festival.

The project includes:

• Repairing pathway cracks
• Removing and replacing entrance paving stones within the Garden
• Upgrading pathways and bridge approaches to improve accessibility
• Improving site grading to enhance drainage
• Rehabilitating affected landscape areas

The budget supports upgrades to most of the Garden's pathway network. Work is focused on areas where improvements will have the greatest impact on accessibility, drainage and long-term asset condition.

"These improvements are an investment in the long-term accessibility, safety and enjoyment of one of Lethbridge's most valued cultural destinations," says Robin Harper, General Manager of Recreation and Culture. "We’re improving the garden for guests and the community while ensuring key community events can continue this fall."

Several popular programs and events will continue during the temporary closure.

The KOKUYOSA (Yosakoi) 2026 Festival takes place September 19 and 20. General admission is free and includes performers and guests from Japan, the United States and Canada. The festival will feature competition, performances, a parade, group dances and workshops.

The Bunka Centre, café and gift shop remain open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fall programming and private rentals continue through September, October and November.

The 11th Annual Winter Light Festival begins November 26 as scheduled, with tickets going on sale in early November.
