Curbside battery collection rolling out November 18-28

The City of Lethbridge's Curbside Battery Collection Program runs tomorrow until November 28.

In partnership with Call2Recycle Canada, this pilot program provides a safe, simple and convenient option for household battery disposal.

Batteries will be picked up the same day as your scheduled curbside organics cart. To participate, use the provided battery collection bag or a resealable plastic bag, then:

  • Stick tape over the positive (+) terminals of your batteries.
  • Place batteries inside bag, seal it securely and store it away from children and pets.
  • Roll out your green cart and place the bag on top of your cart so it’s visible to collection crews. Please do not place the bag inside your cart.

Most household and single-use batteries are accepted, including: AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, coin/button cells and batteries under 5 kg. Rechargeables, NiCad, NiMH, Lithium-Ion, car batteries, battery packs and industrial batteries are not accepted.

City crews will pass through neighbourhoods before green carts are emptied. In the event of snowfall, crews will check the lids of all green carts so batteries aren’t accidentally mixed with organic waste. Once collected, batteries are transported to approved recycling facilities for sorting and processing.

As this is a pilot program, City crews will not return for late or missed collections. Batteries can be dropped off at the Waste and Recycling Centre or other drop-off locations

Residents who use the free Lethbridge Loop app will see a reminder on their collection day.
