Help protect our wildlife, please don’t feed waterfowl

Lethbridge is warming up, and that means thousands of feathered residents are flocking to Henderson Lake. As geese and ducks return from their winter migration, residents and visitors are asked to avoid providing them a ‘Welcome Back’ meal.

The reminder comes after large piles of food, intended for geese and ducks, were recently discovered along the shore.

The food was left near a sign indicating not to feed wildlife.

Feeding waterfowl has several negative consequences, including:

  • Providing them with a lack of substantive nutrition.
  • Forming a dependence on humans for food.
  • Overcrowding of waterfowl habitats.
  • Creating health risks, including avian botulism and the spread of parasites.
  • Inviting other animal populations, including mice and rattlesnakes.

Let's help keep our feathered friends healthy and thriving by respecting their natural diet and environment, ensuring Henderson Lake remains a safe and sustainable home for all its residents.

Information on helping wildlife without feeding them can be found here.
