Interchange improvement project expands next week
The second phase of a major traffic project begins next week.
On Tuesday, June 30, the Whoop-Up Drive/Scenic Drive Interchange Improvement will shift to the Scenic Drive South on-ramp, from westbound 6 Avenue South. The following closures will be in place:
- The Scenic Drive on-ramp will close to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Westbound motorists looking to access Scenic Drive will be detoured north on 5 Street South, then west on 5 Avenue South.
- The northbound Scenic Drive right turn lane to eastbound 5 Avenue will be closed.
Signage will be in place throughout the area to guide motorists and pedestrians during these closures.

Once the 6 Avenue on-ramp reopens, drivers will no longer be able to turn left onto Scenic Drive. A safety review found this turn is unsafe. Because usage is also relatively low, it’s being removed in favour of safer options with traffic lights, including 5 Avenue.
Work on phase one continues at the Whoop-Up Drive on-ramp, where a second lane is being added. This upgrade is similar to the existing on-ramp from northbound University Drive West to Whoop-Up Drive.
The project is scheduled for completion in November 2026. Updates will be shared throughout construction, and more information, including design plans and timelines, is available on the Get Involved Lethbridge webpage.
