River safety reminders for a safe and enjoyable summer

River safety reminders - review our tips before you head out!

As the summer season unfolds, Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) reminds residents and visitors to stay safe while spending time on or near the Oldman River.

The river is a popular destination for recreation, but swift currents, changing water conditions and hidden hazards can quickly turn a fun outing into an emergency. Before heading out, plan ahead and protect yourself and others.

  1. Be prepared and properly equipped
    • Wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) at all times on the river.
    • Check that your PFDs and safety gear are in good working condition before use.
    • Wear sturdy footwear.

  2. Plan your trip and communicate
    • Check weather and river flow conditions in advance.
    • Create a float plan and share it with someone you trust. Include your entry and exit points, group members and expected time on the water.
    • Talk with your group about swimming ability and the importance of sticking together.

  3. Avoid risky behaviour
    • Do not consume alcohol or drugs on or near the river, as they impair your decision-making and increase the risk of injury or drowning.
    • Carry a fully charged cell phone in a waterproof pouch in case of an emergency.
    • Avoid the weir and follow posted warning signs and portage routes.

Each year, LFES receives reports of individuals jumping into the river from the low-level girders of the High Level Bridge. This is private property and extremely dangerous. Beneath the surface lies barbed wire, concrete with exposed rebar, large rocks, tree debris and sudden drop-offs – all of which can entangle, injure or trap you.

Always remember that where there’s water, there’s a risk! Check out more information about water safety and tips on how to safely float the Oldman River.

For emergencies, always call 9-1-1.
