Smoke alarm and neighbours help prevent serious fire

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services responded to a structure fire

Quick-thinking neighbours helped limit damage during a north Lethbridge house fire Tuesday evening.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) responded to a residential structure fire on Tuesday, June 24, in the 1500 block of 7 Avenue North.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., crews from three stations were dispatched after neighbours reported smoke coming from the ground-floor window and a smoke alarm sounding inside the home. The homeowners were not present at the time.

On arrival, firefighters found a small fire inside the residence that was quickly extinguished.

The fire was determined to be accidental, with moderate damage to one room. No injuries were reported.

LFES acknowledge the neighbours who called 9-1-1 after noticing smoke and hearing the alarm. Their prompt action helped prevent the fire from spreading and causing further damage.

Residents are reminded to dispose of oily or solvent-soaked rags and paper products properly. These items can ignite on their own and should be stored in a sealed metal container or disposed of safely according to product instructions.
