What do I need to apply?

  • The City of Lethbridge has an integrated fire and emergency medical services system. That means, all members must be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) as a primary care paramedic or advanced care paramedic (preference will be given to advanced care paramedics)
  • Candidates must obtain a Class 3 or above driver’s license/airbrake within the first year of employment
  • Completed Paramedic/EMT Firefighter Application Checklist

Hiring Process

Once the posting closes, complete applications are reviewed according to listed qualifications and invitations for physical testing are made.

  • Physical testing:
    • Fitness testing if done through the University of Alberta and results will be recognized for 6 month
    • Failures are common, applicants are urged to prepare early for this test
    • Peer fitness trainers are available to assist applicants in their preparation
  • Applicants who pass the physical may be invited for further testing in Lethbridge including:
    • Fire aptitude test (written)
    • Medical scenario
    • Multiple choice medical exam
    •  Interview
    • Inwald personality inventory
  • After testing is complete a short list of applicants will be booked with a phycologist to complete the inwald assessment
  • Once the entire process is complete, offers of employment will be sent out

Invites to the physical and subsequent stages are made based on the following qualifications (in order of importance):

    1. Advanced care paramedic
    2. 2 Year advanced paramedic student
    3. Fire training certification
    4. Experience in an advanced life support EMS system (excluding industrial)
    5. Other education/volunteering

New Recruit Training​

Successful applicants start their career with ten weeks of training lead by our Fire and EMS training officers. Material covered includes:

  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2
  • 1072 hazardous material awareness and operations
  • Vehicle extrication
  • Road to mental readiness (R2MR)
  • IAFF Fire Ground Survival
  • PETZL PES Escape Device Training
  • Blue Card Command for the Firefighter
  • IAPD

Ride-alongs

To help provide more information to potential candidates, ride-alongs can be arranged by completing the an application and waiver. 

Prerequisites

  • EMR, primary care paramedic or advanced care paramedic with ACP registration
  • Criminal record check
