How to apply - Paramedic

Our recruitment process is highly competitive and comprehensive, and consists of multiple stages. 

Paramedic employees will begin their career with LFES in the dedicated EMS division. During your employment, you will have the opportunity to progress between career streams: 

  1. Dedicated EMS Division
    • Work exclusively as a Paramedic in emergency medical services at your designation (ACP/PCP).
    • Focus on patient care, clinical excellence, and advancing your skills as a paramedic.
    • Option will exist to remain dedicated to EMS operations for the entirety of your career without fire suppression responsibilities.

  2. Integrated Fire-EMS Division  
    • Transition from the dedicated EMS division and begin fire training to qualify for the role of Paramedic Firefighter within the LFES Integrated Fire-EMS division.
    • Expand your expertise to include fire suppression, rescue operations, and integrated emergency response.
    • Entry into the Integrated Fire-EMS Division will be based on available vacancies. Prior to being eligible to fill one of these vacancies, you will be required to complete the Fire Academy. Scheduling of the academy will be at the discretion of LFES Administration based on operational needs and internal eligibility criteria.

To apply for a Paramedic Firefighter position at LFES, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Alberta College of Paramedics registration  
    • Applicants must be registered as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), with preference given to ACPs.
  2. Drivers' License 
    • A minimum of a Province of Alberta Class 4 Drivers' License is required upon the start date. 
    • Candidates must obtain a Class 3 and Q endorsement for air brakes prior to starting fire academy (cost not reimbursed by the employer).  
  3. Drivers' Abstract 
    • Dated within 3 months of the closing date of the job posting.
  4. Police Information Check with vulnerable sector search
    • Dated within 3 months of the closing date of the job posting.
  5. F.A.R.E. test results (proof of successful completion within 6 months of the close of this posting)
  6. Fully completed Paramedic Application Checklist
  7. Submit your application

Please note that hiring for Paramedic is prioritized based on the following qualifications (in order of importance):

  • Advanced Care Paramedic
  • Second-year Advanced Care Paramedic student
  • Experience in an Advanced Life Support EMS system (excluding industrial experience)
  • Fire Training Certification
  • Other education/volunteering experience 

Once the job posting closes, complete applications are reviewed based on listed qualifications. Selected candidates will be invited for physical testing. 

  • Behavioural descriptive job interview
  • Medical written exam and scenario testing
  • Written psychological evaluation exams
  • Written Firefighter Aptitude exam

Candidates selected to proceed to the final stage of the hiring process will undergo a psychological interview assessment in person. Successful candidates will also be required to pass a comprehensive medical assessment.

  • Airtraq Video Laryngoscope
  • High-performance CPR 
  • Handtevy Pediatric Emergency System
  • International Academy for Professional Driving (IAPD)
  • The Working Mind
