Throwing stuff in the garbage is easy – but where does it go from there?

Waste & Environment works to keep Lethbridge clean and sustainable. They manage waste collection, processing and diversion. Their goal is to keep as much waste as possible out of the landfill.

They pick up garbage, recycling and organic waste from homes and businesses, and accept all types of waste at the landfill. Food scraps and yard waste are used to make compost. Residents use that compost at home and our Parks team uses it in parks and green spaces. 

There are also three drop-off depots throughout the city. They accept recyclables and yard waste. 

When youth learn how our local waste systems work, they can make better choices. Reducing waste helps to protect our local environment for years to come.

Clean drinking water is vital for all life – but where does it come from?

Water & Wastewater manages 590 kilometres of water mains and six storage reservoirs with pump stations. This system delivers water throughout our entire city and to some neighbouring communities. There is also a complex network of pipes that collect and move stormwater. 

At the Water Treatment Plant, water from the Oldman River gets processed into clean tap water. Using a multi-step treatment process, the plant treats up to 150 million litres of water daily.

At the Wastewater Treatment Plant, wastewater gets cleaned and disinfected. Then, it flows back into the Oldman River. Stormwater goes straight into the river or storm ponds.

Public transit is essential to help everyone get around and stay connected.

Lethbridge Transit works to make buses in our city safe, accessible and reliable. They manage a system of 72 buses, 13 bus routes and seven bus terminals.

Learning how to use public transit supports independence and confidence. Riders in Lethbridge must be 11 years old to ride on their own, but early education can prepare kids of all ages.

Planning & Design helps shape the future of Lethbridge. They plan for growth by deciding where homes, businesses, parks, schools, roads and other services should be located. Their goal is to create safe, connected and livable neighborhoods for current and future residents.

As Lethbridge grows, planners work with engineers, developers, City departments and the community to make informed decisions. They consider transportation, green spaces, utilities, environmental impacts and how people will use the spaces they create.

Good planning balances the needs of many different people while preparing the city for the future. Every decision helps create a community where people can live, work, learn and play.
