HVAC Permits

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems play a critical role in comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality.  HVAC permits ensure that systems are installed safely and meet the requirements of the Alberta Building Code, Alberta Gas Code, Plumbing Code, and the Safety Codes Act.

Before beginning construction, review the information on this page to ensure your project meets all requirements and that you have applied for the necessary permits.

When do you need a permit?

HVAC permits must be obtained by a licensed mechanical contractor; homeowners may only apply if they hold the appropriate trade certification.

An HVAC permit is required when you install, replace, or alter a heating, ventilation, or air conditioning system in a residential or commercial building.  Gas-fired HVAC equipment also requires a gas permit, obtained by a certified gasfitter.  Also, electrical work associated with HVAC systems requires a separate electrical permit.

  • Installing or replacing furnaces, boilers, or air handlers
  • Installing or replacing air conditioning systems (central AC)
  • Adding or modifying ductwork
  • Installing heat pumps or hybrid heating systems
  • Installing or modifying venting or combustion air
  • Installing make-up air units or exhaust systems
  • Altering an existing HVAC system as part of a renovation or addition

  • Routine maintenance or servicing that does not alter the system
  • Replacing filters, thermostats, or minor components without system changes

  • Manufacturer specifications (BTU rating, efficiency, venting requirements)
  • Duct layout or system design (for new or modified systems)
  • Contractor name and license number
  • Gas and electrical permit numbers (if applicable)

Complex systems or commercial projects may require engineer stamped drawings.

Inspections

Inspections are required at key stages of construction:

  • Rough-in (ducting, venting, combustion air before concealment))
  • Final (equipment installed and operational)

You must schedule inspections at least one business day in advance.  Please schedule using the eInspections portal.
