Plumbing Permits
Plumbing permits ensure that plumbing systems are installed, altered or extended safely and in compliance with the Alberta Safety Codes Act and the National Plumbing Code. Whether you’re installing new plumbing, renovating existing systems or connecting to sewer/water infrastructure, permits and inspections protect health, property and public infrastructure.

When do you need a permit?
- Routine maintenance
- Replacement of fixtures if the plumbing system itself is not expanded or altered (e.g., replacing a faucet) although these actions must still comply with applicable codes.
How to apply?
You can apply online through eApply or in person at City Hall.
Your application should include:
- Property address and applicant contact information
- Description of work (new installation, extension, alteration)
- Pipe layout, fixture locations, and service connections (if applicable)
- Contractor license and certification details
- Trade drawings or plans for complex or commercial systems

- Residential: minimum permit fee of $110.00 plus applicable Safety Codes Council levy. Fees increase based on the total construction value.

- Rough-in (before concealment of piping

FAQs
Can I do minor repairs without a permit?
Yes. Routine maintenance (e.g., clearing clogs, replacing faucets) that does not alter or extend the plumbing system does not require a permit.
Do commercial buildings require separate plumbing permits?
Yes. Commercial, institutional and multi-unit residential plumbing work requires a permit and must be applied for by a licensed contractor.
Does replacing a hot water tank require a permit?
A permit may be required it the replacement involves changes to water or drainage piping or alters venting conditions.
How long is a plumbing permit valid?
Plumbing permits can expire, so it's important to plan your project in advance to avoid delays or cancellations.
Permits expire when:
- Work has not started within 90 days of permit issuance
- Work has been suspended or abandoned for 120 days after it was started
Permits can be closed if there is no entry arranged or permitted. Work covered by the permit must be completed within 365 days.
