A new “Give It a Try” feature at this year’s Community Conversation invites residents to explore hands‑on, on-ice activities inspired by the 2026 Alberta Winter Games and the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Let me welcome you to the first Mayor’s Column of 2026.

To those new to reading this: I write this monthly feature on behalf of Lethbridge City Council to keep people informed on matters of importance in the community, as well as to highlight achievements by members of our community. I try to use this space to focus on the positive pieces and the good news stories we have in the wonderful city we all call home, as well as to provide further context on some of the more complicated matters.

With the need for infrastructure upgrades, the City of Lethbridge has started a preliminary design plan for 5 Street South between 1 Avenue South and 6 Avenue South in Downtown Lethbridge.

We want you to tell us about your priorities for the future of 5 Street South.

The City of Lethbridge Electric Utility Department is upgrading residential and commercial electricity meters that are due for testing. This is in alignment with regulations set by Measurement Canada to ensure electricity is being measured accurately.

Community feedback is now open on the City’s snow‑route plowing services and winter operations. Residents can share their experiences with snow clearing, the snow‑route network, and the Windrow Assistance Service. Input will help shape the ongoing snow and ice pilot program.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services, Lethbridge Police Service and the City of Lethbridge’s Community Social Development department are reminding residents that reporting encampments plays a key role in preventing fires and supporting a coordinated, community-based response. 

The annual Community Capital Projects Grant is back!

The grant gives non‑profit organizations funding to upgrade facilities and equipment. Focus is placed on projects that build a more inclusive and accessible community.

The City of Lethbridge is beginning a functional planning and design study for an active transportation link.

The study encompasses the area from 26 Avenue North to Scenic Drive South, between 16 Street North/South and 20 Street North/South.

While Santa was busy checking his list, the Holiday Bus was making stops around town. Decked out in dazzling lights and brimming with holiday spirit, it helped spark the magic of the season in many ways.
